Poll tax is one of the most important one among all types of taxes that people have to pay to the government of a country. There are other terms that are used for poll tax. These are called head tax and capitation. These taxes came into existence in the 19th century. Once these taxes were largest source of income for government of any country. Election is a thing of great importance in a democratic country and that is why poll taxes are of utmost significance throughout the whole world. At first the African-Americans were not allowed to give vote but later on their fate changed and they also came under the poll tax.

Poll tax played a huge role in United States as far as capitation is concerned. There was also a provision to keep the poor voters out of their franchising power. The rules and regulations that are followed in the case of poll tax is completely different than that of income tax. All the developed countries in the whole world has the provisions of poll tax. This tax is charged before any important election in the country. This tax has immense importance in case of franchising power. People who do not pay this tax do not get the access to vote.
In United Kingdom there is a system of charging people with tax on their movable properties like cars and other means of transportation. The poll tax is sometimes included in the money taken under this category. At the beginning of 20th century there were community taxes from which a considerable amount of money was deducted for the purpose of poll tax. Canada also began taking poll tax from public during the year 1885 and this was charged on the Chinese people who were coming into Canada.
The poll tax in a country help the government a lot in making all the preparations for the elections. There are a lots of expenditure for any election that is done by the government. Among them there are expenditures for the polling booths and other costs as well. So, government needs money during the time of elections and this money mainly comes from poll tax.
